National
Dog Day
- Saturday August 3,
2008
Hopes to galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs
that need to be rescued each year. It will also acknowledge the dogs that
work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.
Dogs put their lives on the line everyday -for their law enforcement partner
, for their blind master, for a child who is disabled, for our freedom and
safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from
wreckage, saving lives and often grieving the dead and dying they cannot
save.
The founder of
National Dog Day is Colleen Paige who felt it was
time to honor dogs more than we currently do, give them a day to show our
appreciation for our connection to each other, their endearing patience,
unquestioning loyalty, for their work, their capacity for love and their
ability to impact our lives every day in the most miraculous ways.
The non-profit National Dog Day Foundation is working diligently
, planning celebrity charity events and ""Wagging Our Flag" to get the word
out. The first annual
National Dog Day Parade is coming to New York City in
2006 to call attention to dog issues with the hope of impacting the outreach
of small animal rescue organizations across the country. Each citizen even
if you are not a dog owner will be encouraged to donate $5 to their local
shelter on
National Dog Day. From the Search and Rescue dogs of September
11th, to celebrity dogs, guide dogs, police dogs and more the first annual
National Dog Day Parade will host and honor the most amazing dogs America
gives residence to.
The Mascot for National Dog Day is: Miss "Tinkerbelle" Southworth who was chosen as the First Official
National Dog Day Mascot
because she brings love and joy to everyone who comes in contact with her.
She encompasses most every quality one would want in a dog, especially if
one can overlook her obsession of food, kissing children, chasing squirrels
and bossing around Rottweilers at the dog park!
